Thom Conroy
Thom grew up with a musical family in Witney, West Oxfordshire. At the age of 9 he began taking Cello lessons.

Aged 16, he was accepted onto Wood Green School’s Excellent Musicians Programme, inviting him to attend Dr. John Traill’s Musicology and Composition lectures at St Anne’s College, Oxford University. He also began to play with the Oxford County Youth Orchestra.

During his studies with WGS’s acclaimed music department, he taught himself Saxophone, Clarinet and Flute in order to perform with the Big Band and Wind Orchestra.

In 2017, Thom was accepted into the Strings Department at RWCMD in Cardiff. As a passionate Musical Theatre player, he began performing in Am-Dram productions covering the wind parts wherever he could.

In the summer of 2019, Thom learnt of a new pathway being introduced at the college; for multi-instrumental musicians to begin triple-study in the Woodwind department. As an unknown reed player, Thom became one of the few musicians to transfer their entire musical discipline at conservatoire level, from Strings to Woodwind, to finish his BMus under the guidance of his mentor, James Mainwaring.

Thom performed with NYMT for its commission of the brand-new musical Legend Trippers in the summer of 2019. He also began studying Oboe and English Horn.

Thom has spent his time since the pandemic refining his skills on the MMus Multi-Instrumental pathway at RWCMD, with tuition from West-End players Neil Crossley (Frozen), Sarah James (Cabaret), Sally MacTaggart (Rock Orchestra and regular freelance dep) and RPO’s Patrick Flanaghan (Double Reed tuition). All under the direction of Robert Plane, head of Woodwind at RWCMD.

Ever-inquisitive, Thom is now exploring World Instruments such as Bansuri, Shakuhachi, Tin Whistles, DiXi and Erhu.
